Balcony rooms

Your own outdoor space can change how a hotel room feels — but not every balcony offers the same space, privacy or outlook. It is worth checking what comes with the exact room.

A balcony should be somewhere you actually want to sit.

What is a balcony room?

A balcony room is accommodation with a private outdoor platform accessed directly from the room. Depending on the hotel, that can range from a compact standing balcony to a larger furnished space suitable for sitting, eating or relaxing.

The word itself tells you relatively little about size or outlook. Two rooms can both be described as having a balcony while offering very different experiences.

What should you check?

Usable space

Check whether the balcony is large enough for how you intend to use it. A small balcony may be perfectly suitable for fresh air and a view but not for spending long periods outside.

Furniture

If sitting outside matters, look for room-level information showing whether seating, a table, loungers or other outdoor furniture are actually provided.

Privacy

Balconies can be open to neighbouring rooms or separated by screens and walls. The hotel design can make a significant difference if privacy is important.

Outlook

A balcony does not automatically mean a sea, pool or attractive resort view. Confirm the view category separately if the outlook matters as much as the outdoor space.

The exact room category

Some hotels offer balconies only on selected room types or floors. Make sure the package includes a balcony within the specific room being offered for your dates.

When should it be a MUST?

If having somewhere private to sit outside is an important part of your morning or evening routine on holiday, make a balcony a MUST. If you would trade it for a stronger room feature such as a private pool or exceptional view, it may be better as a PREFER.

RoomSorted's intended matching approach is to treat a balcony as a room-level feature rather than assuming it from the hotel or room photography alone.

A pool-view room can give a resort atmosphere from your balcony or window, but position, height and noise can make a real difference. The next guide explains what to check.
